Tool Care & Sharpening
Sharpen on the bevel, oil the pivot, clean off the sap. Three habits that decide how long a tool lasts.
Sharpening
Hold the open tool firmly and set the sharpener on the bevel, on the outside face of the blade. Pull the sharpener parallel along the bevel at roughly the factory angle. Repeat until the edge is restored. Do not grind the flat inside face — that changes the blade geometry and the two halves stop meeting.
Daily oiling
Inject oil into the Center Oiler Bolt every second day of use by depressing the ball bearing in the centre of the bolt head. Apply a thin coat of oil to the blade and to the outside of springs and moving parts after each day, to repel moisture and prevent oxidisation.
Cleaning
Dissolve sap with a blade cleaner and a soft cloth. Apply, let it penetrate, wipe off, and repeat as needed. Oil the blade after cleaning, not before.
What wears out first
- Blade — resharpen until the profile is gone, then replace
- Spring — the most commonly replaced part on a hand pruner
- Bumper — a worn bumper transmits shock straight into the hand
- Pivot bolt — check tension before assuming the blade is blunt
Replacement blades, springs, grips and bumpers for most models are ordered at parts.barnel.com.
